Gods among us-part XXXI

 Anna returned to the dining table holding the tray with the ice cream.

“Oh my god!” JJ said. “I love homemade ice cream!”

Anna smiled satisfied.

“Mmm” Niko said looking at his bowl.

Mark was eating quietly.

“Is everything OK?” Niko asked him.

Mark looked at him surprised.

“Yes, why?”

“You are quiet the whole time.” JJ said.

Mark forced a smile.

“I guess I am just tired. I am sorry about that.”

“Don't be!” Niko said. “We understand and we won't stay long. We also have a few things to take care of.”

 

Nora was checking her phone.

“Still no message?” Mary asked.

“No.” Nora said and took a deep breath.

Phil came closer.

“Don't worry.” He said. “I am sure he is fine.”

“I know.” Nora said with a smile on her face. “It's not easy not to worry."

“It never is!” Amy completed.

“Come on guys, let's change the subject.” Nora said. “So” she said looking at Mary “are you guys together again?”

Mary smiled.

“I guess you are not the only one who keeps falling in love with the same person on every lifetime.”

“And how are things between you two?” Amy asked.

“So far so good.” Mary answered.

“I never thought that the God of War will be a good partner.” Phil commented.

Mary smiled.

“Love is the answer to everything.”

“Love and war” Nora whispered and looked outside.

“Hey” Amy touched her shoulder “We will win.”

Nora looked at her.

“I know.” She said. “Look, the sky is getting grey.” she pointed out.

Alex came closer.

“I think that daddy is getting nervous.” he said smiling. Nora turned on him and touched his face.

“I missed you guys.”

Alex held her hand.

“We missed you too mom” he said and kissed her on her cheek.

 

JJ and Niko left and Anna put the dishes in the sink. Mark was observing her. Come on, you've done this before. Just tell her that you want to break up.

“Anna?” He said finding finally the courage.

Anna turned her head and looked at him.

“What's going on?” She asked.

“I told you that I need to talk to you.”

“Yes you did. Give me 10 min to clean this up and we can talk.”

“Thank you.” Mark said and went to the living room. Oh god Anna thought. I don't have a good feeling about this.

She finished quickly and went to the living room as well. She saw Mark sitting in the sofa and she sat next to him.

“What's up?” She asked smiling.

Mark took a deep breath.

“I need you to understand that it’s not easy for me and I thought a lot about it.”

Anna touched his hand worried.

“You scare me.” She said all serious.

Mark stood up.

“Listen Anna, you're a great woman and you deserve the best one. But this person is not me.” He said cold.

Anna looked at him surprised.

“W...wh...what you mean?” She asked him with a trembling voice.

Mark took another deep breath and looked her in the eyes.

“I want to break up.”

Anna stood up immediately and furious.

“WHAT?????” She yelled.

“Anna please, lower your voice.”

“You have to be joking. Oh please tell me that you're joking.” She said with a pleading voice and tears in her eyes.

“I am not, I am sorry.”

“There is another woman, am I right?” Anna yelled.

“No, there is no one.”

“LIAR! YOU ARE A LIAR!!!” She yelled. “I SAW YOU WITH HER AT THE COMPANY'S PARTY.”

Mark looked at Anna.

“Anna please, calm down” He told her calmly.

“DON’T YOU DARE TO TELL ME TO CALM DOWN!”

“Look, I don't want us to fight...”

“HA! REALLY? AND WHAT HAVE YOU EXPECTED?” Anna interrupted him and sat in the chair by the dining table. She broke into tears and she held her head with her hands.

“You have every right to be angry at me but I don't want to lie or pretend that everything is fine when is not.”

Anna was shaking her head.

“Am I suppose to thank you now?” She said crying.

“No, I am not expecting that.”

“Oh good.” she said ironically. “Because it's not going to happened.” She said and whipped away her tears.

“Anna, please try to understand...”

“Understand what? Are you listening to yourself? Everything was fine and don't you even think to deny that.” She said by raising her finger. “I left for my parents, I missed you so much, I come back home, in OUR home and instead of finding you here, you were I don't know where. Probably with her. Oh my god, you were with her..." she said crying.

"Anna, don't do this to yourself. "

Anna looked at him.

"Now you care about me? What? You thought oh wait a minute I need to break up with Anna and I will come back? You know what Mark? Go to h**l!!” She said and a new wave of tears came along.

Mark moved towards her and sat across of her.

“It's more complicated than that.” He whispered.

“Explain then. Don't treat me like an idiot.”

“Anna, you won't understand.”

“Try me.” She said and crossed her hands in her chest.

Mark shook his hand.

“No. You won't understand.” He insisted.

“What I won't understand? That you fell in love with someone else? Is this what you're trying to tell me?”

Mark looked at her but stayed quite.

“Who is she? Is she from work? The one that you danced with?”

Mark said nothing but moved his eyes away from Anna. Her picture, sitting there and crying was breaking his heart. But how can someone avoid their destiny? And his destiny was to be king of God's. To fight against his parents and uncles and aunts having his siblings and children as an allies but how could he explain all this to Anna or to anyone without exposing himself, without exposing the others? And more than that, no one would understand, everyone would think that he is crazy.

“Mark, are you even listen to me?” Anna said crying.

Mark looked at her again.

“Yes, I am.”

“Then tell me.”

“Tell you what?”

“The truth for Gods sake. I think I deserve it after all these years.”

Damn she is right he thought. Ok here we go.

He looked at her and took a sit.

“OK.” He said. “I will. But I need you to be open minded on whatever you hear. Can you promise me that?”

Anna looked at him puzzled.

“OK.” she said hesitantly.

“It all started thousands of years ago.....”
